Florida - Day 8-9

Day 8-9: Merritt Island and Melbourne

Last hours in Florida, but still having a blast!
Time to visit another Natural State Park: Merritt Island Park http://www.fws.gov/merrittisland/
There's a nice road that crosses the park, where we saw many birds and more turtles - and hoped to see more gators, but didn't get the chance: maybe we saw too much of them at the Everglades!

Second half of the day: Merritt Island doesn't only host thye wildlife refuge, but it's also the location of the Kennedy Space Center - do I need to add anything?!

The visit is really cool: you can live one of the Apollo launches, see the actual rockets (all sizes and shapes!), watch two amazing 3D movies. I think the movies change from time to time, but the day we went there was a movie on the story of the International Space Station, with a collection of videos recorded inside the ISS, and a movie on the origin of the Universe and the life of the Hubble telescope, with incredible pictures taken by the same telescope.
It was really like being inside the ISS or the Hubble!

For our last evening in Florida, we celebrated with a great sunset in Cocoa Beach, in two steps: first, aperitif on the Pier, at Mai Tiki Bar (http://cocoabeachpier.com/cbp/restaurants-bars-on-the-cocoa-beach-pier/mai-tiki-bar/ )

Second, dinner on a sea terrace at Sunset Waterfront Grill (http://sunsetwaterfrontcafeandbar.com/)

The morning after, last hint of savage life just outside the hotel

Then last walk on the beach in Melbourne Beach, trying to get ready to get back to the City - didn't work out too well, still having problems to recover...

Florida - Day 7

Day 7:  Key West - Port Saint Lucie

A weird driving day: tropical storm leaving Key West (not before a last sandwich at Bo's), and all the way up to Miami.
Miami Beach on a stormy day: no one on the beach, cold tourists, fewer people ready to party - but only waiting for the rain to stop.

We spent the night in Port Saint Lucie, at a very nice hotel very hard to find: the Homewood Suites Port St Lucie ( http://homewoodsuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/florida/homewood-suites-by-hilton-port-st-lucie-tradition-PSLHWHW/index.html) - google maps is not sure on where it is (actually A in the picture, in caso)

Florida - Day 4-5-6

Day 4-5-6: Key West
Ah Key West, what a place.
We get downtown around sunset, after a day spent on a beautiful beach in another island (the Keys are all connected through bridges), the weather unsure between sun and storm.

The town is really nice: old colonial-caribbean houses, most of them renewed, with rich gardens.

The first incredible surprise is the hotel: booking online always leaves you with a certain level of doubt, even if Trip Advisor says you probably made the right choice. Well, this time we made it.
http://www.southernmostresorts.com/la-mer-dewey-house/

It's exactly as you can see it in the website pictures: a gorgeous villa on the beach, breakfast on the patio facing the sea, fresh fruit and juice, Nutella if you are Italian and sometimes you need it ;)
And it is part of the Southernmost Hotel (the best one after La Mer Dewey House is the Southernmost on the Beach, in case you're planning a trip to Key West), so private pools and private beach: what a change from the sweaty swomp!

Visiting Key West - Visitare Key West
It's mostly the sea, but there is also Ernest Hemingway's house http://www.hemingwayhome.com/
It's worth the visit and the expense: the guides are really very good and will tell you many interesting stories on Ernest, his many wives and their 6-fingered cats.

There's also the southernmost point of continental US: Cuba is only 90 miles avay - beware of the invaders!

And of course the sea is amazing, and there are so many animals!
We did two snorkeling trips (dolphin snorkeling and sunset snorkeling, at http://www.furycat.com/), and we saw dolphins, hundreds of tropical fishes, 1m long weird fishes, sharks (supposedly with no teeths, but you never know), a nurse shark (super impressive..), a giant lobster, a giant hermit crab (with a 30cm long shell).
But most of all, a giant sea turtle, some 1m long, and we could actually swim with her for a little while - that's been the most exciting experience :)

Eating in Key West
If you're European, you may be interested: most restaurant close around 10-10.30 pm, but the Hard Rock Cafe is open till midnight, and will save you from starving. And burgers are good
Mangiare a Key West
http://www.hardrock.com/locations/cafes3/cafe.aspx?LocationID=90&MIBEnumID=3

For lunch: Bo's Fishwagon (http://www.bosfishwagon.com/) is mandatory, absolutely amazing, sandwiches with fresh fish (try the grilled Mahi Mahi or the grilled Wahoo) and a great Key lime sauce; try the KeyLimonade, a freshly made lemonade with Key lime juice

For pre-dinner: Take a walk to Mallory Square, and drink a cocktail on the pier

For dinner: Blue Heaven (http://www.blueheavenkw.com/), extremely good, the Beef tenderloin is unique, and the Key Lime Pie very special

For post-dinner: In the mood for a killer dessert? Better Than Sex (http://betterthansexkeywest.com/) will work out extremely well, with super creamy and chocolate-based cakes. To be tried: they serve wine in glasses covered with chocolate - dark chocolate and red one are great together

For drinking: At least take a look at Sloppy Joe's (http://www.sloppyjoes.com/history.htm), where Hemingway used to go and get drunk every night

The weather: eh, not always good - just a little tropical storm on the day we left...

Florida - Day 3

Day 3: Everglades (Naples - Islamorada)
Another day starts! And it's going to be something different again: nature and adventure at the Everglades park, a giant swamp populated by so many different animals: birds, snakes, turtles, gators.
Am I forgetting anything..? Oh, mosquitos!
Suggestions: mosquito spray is mandatory all year - The Shark Valley Trail http://www.nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/tram-road.htm - The off-roads, like Burns Road or Loop Road, FULL of animals http://www.nps.gov/common/commonspot/customcf/apps/maps/showmap.cfm?alphacode=ever&parkname=Everglades
Dimentico qualcuno? Le zanzare!
Suggerimenti: spray anti zanzare obbligatorio tutto l'anno - The Shark Valley Trail http://www.nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/tram-road.htm - Le strade secondarie, come Burns Road o Loop Road, PIENE di animali http://www.nps.gov/common/commonspot/customcf/apps/maps/showmap.cfm?alphacode=ever&parkname=Everglades

Before leaving the Everglades, close to sunset, a quick trip to Flamingo, extreme south: an amazing view over the floating islands - groups of Mangroves that live where the swomp meets the sea, just before the Key Islands

A long day, a long drive, some deserved rest - maybe at another hotel next time (but that's always a reason why they call them motels...)
