May 2013: Down south - Giu' al sud

Memorial Day gave us a nice long weekend and we decided to go down south: Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas, four states in three days.

Day 0: Arriving in Nashville, Tennessee
First thing we wanted to check out the Bluebird Cafe', one of the most famous country music places in town. Then we drove downtown Nashville, where Broadway is full of people and live music

Day 1: Down to Alabama
On Saturday morning we drove around Nashville and then took the road to Alabama.
We stopped in Huntsville, where a small area of the city (the Constitution Village: http://earlyworks.com/the-museums/constitution-village) has been conserved as in 1812, when Alabama wrote its constitution, and became the 22nd state of the USA. Local tour guides dressed up as in the 1810's explained us how things worked back then: slavery, Indians, everyday life between home, work and the post office; even a reproduction of the Liberty Bell: we saw the original in Philly, but this one we could even touch and play! Impressing: it keeps vibrating for minutes...
Giorno 1: Giu' in Alabama

On Sunday we drove back north, through Mississippi, where we stopped at Waverly Plantation Mansion in Four Points (http://www.newsouthernview.com/pages/nsv_ie_waverley.html), magnificent house and garden, and a very lovely lady telling us old stories
Second stop in Tupelo, the birthplace of Elvis, where we visited the house lived till the age of 11, when he and his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he lately became the Legend we all know.
Last stop in Arkansas, at West Memphis, old industrial town
Giorno 2: Attraverso il Mississippi

Wrapping up: an historical weekend, discovering a very different side of the US - poorer, older, maybe more real
