Tips and Privileges - Consigli e privilegi

An advice which is always valid, especially here in New York: when you take the subway, pay attention to where you're going

You will often see, going down the stairs to enter the subway, a writing like "Line 1 - Downtown", and you will see in front of you only the paygate, and the platform immediately after. You will then think that's not a problem, because in all the civil Countries you can always pass the paygate, look for other stairs, cross the platforms and find yourselves on the other side, ready to go Uptown and home. Therefore you will peacefully swipe your subway ticket in the paygate, you will see your 2.50$ leave your pocket, but you will already taste the true happiness of home's sofa.
Well, the problem is that in the majority of the metro stops in New York, this is not true.
I mean that once you'll pass the paygate you will see another rising staircase along the platform, but you will realize that, to climb it, you will have to pass the paygate again, losing your 2.50$
What will you do then? You will want to belive, you will take the subway in that same direction, going down at the first stop and looking for some stairs to cross the platform and go in the opposite (right) direction.
And you will not find any stairs
But you still want to believe, so you take the subway again for another stop (at this point...) and you go out again
This time you barely save bad words, you give up, pass the paygate, climb the stairs, find yourselves outside, (usually at this point it starts raining), where you look for some stairs which say "Line 1 - Uptown" and you go down again. What's next? You take your Metro ticket out of your pocket again, you re-swipe it in the paygate (and the administration of the city of New York deeply thanks you for the 2.50$ you're offering them), and you're finally free to go home

And when you're home you can finally enjoy the greatest privilege of American life: cable tv - which by the way your Time Warner Cable friends insisted so much to offer you, and thus you enjoy it a little bit more, because you are an Italian guy who just realized you have been able not to pay for something
And in this season all the brand new tv shows begin, together with the latest series of your favorite tv shows. Because nowadays movies come out in theaters almost at the same time all over the world (even if I have a few exceptions in mind), whereas for tv shows European poeple still have to wait

This is what you can wait for, then - or at least the few things I already watched or am going to

Sunday
PAN AM - New show. Not bad: some romance, comedy, drama, spy, with stewardesses and pilots of the glorious Pan Am, US air company, closed a few years ago

Monday
How I met your mother - New season. First 2 episodes great, second 2 descending, we'll see. But it's always good ;)
The Playboy club - New show. Not bad at all, action and drama in the 60's, beautiful songs

Tuesday
New Girl - New show. Not checked yet, but it seems a nice comedy

Wednesday
Revenge - New show. Not checked yet, but it seems a good drama with some mystery - why not??

Thursday
Grey's anatomy - New season. Good dense episodes, really enjoyable

And the cool thing is that on all cable tv (abc, fox, cbs, ...) the programming makes totally sense, 'cause tv shows start at 8pm and finish at 11pm, lasting for 30 or 60 minutes: no Italian Style never ending soirees, with 4 episodes in a row, that's great!

And it's also free ;)

Lunedi
How I met your mother - Nuova stagione.
The Playboy club - Nuova serie.

Martedi
New Girl - Nuova serie.

Giovedi
Grey's anatomy - Nuova stagione.

E poi e' gratis ;)

Public and Private - Pubblico e Privato

Public
The first two weeks of work in New York - how did it go, you may ask
ZS is always ZS, so luckily the job is almost the same, even if 60 East Coast Americans cannot be compared to 20 wild Italians ;)

(ZS building, Two Grand Central Tower, 21st floor)

And for sure, switching from a single office to a cubicle in the open space is a... mhm... formative experience

Private
The first two weeks of life in New York - how did it go, you may ask
Well, I probably don't have to tell you this, but New York is a unique and amazing city, and luckily I have some friends who help me in getting to know it

Yesterday Libby (former ZSer, wandering between Princeton London and Philadelphia, who now has a new job here in New York), showed me a hint of Lower Manhattan
Brunch at The Odeon http://theodeonrestaurant.com/ in tribeca, than shopping in SoHo (= SOuth of HOuston Street), NoHo (guess what, NOrth of HOuston Street), Little Italy and China Town - but onyl because we were there around ;)
Included in the tour, a view of the World Trade Center: in 2008 there was only a hole, in early 2010 you could see a first draft of the Memorial, now there are two big buildings, almost complete - for sure American people never back off nor give up

(On the left, one of the two new buildings at Ground Zero)

Pubblico

(Nella foto, l'edificio dove ha sede ZS New York, Two Grand Central Tower, 21esimo piano)

"Chuck? Perche' tuo nipote e' in una scatola?"
"Sta testando la mia nuova invenzione, 'Il Mio Primo Cubicolo'"
"Che ne pensi Timmy?"
"Sono annoiato e depresso"
"Funziona!"

Privato

Brunch al The Odeon http://theodeonrestaurant.com/ a Tribeca, giro per negozi tra SoHo (= SOuth of HOuston Street), NoHo (indovinate, NOrth of HOuston Street), Little Italy e China Town - ma solo perche' ci siamo passate vicino eh ;)

One for all - Tutto in una volta

And here I am, back to the States!

Landed on Thursday night, furnished with giant bags (a total of 52kg, just like me - ok, more or less...) and a little dazed by the journey and the fast switch Roma - Milano - New York
New York is always New York: it's already Fall, the wind gets channeled through the skyscrapers like in a tunnel, and it's already way colder than in Italy, but the feeling is really good

As usual, in these very first days I already collected some real American experience, worthy of being reported in this blog ;)

A night out
To fight jetlag I forced myself to go to sleep as late as possible, to try not to wake up at 4am; so far so good: on Thursday night I unpacked (and it took me almost the same time I needed to pack, but this time on my own) and I got settled, on Friday I went out with a few colleagues I already knew
Busy night: happy hour (here it's at 5.30pm, and you can just drink - Milano is something else), dinner (Mexican but nice restaurant), and bar

The bar offered deep emotions: there was a beer pong, and non-teenager people were playing with a certain satisfaction. There are a few bars in NYC where you can play beer pong, a wonderful game which has unexpected fans, like two guys in their suits who were playing yesterday night
For who doesn't know http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_pong, for anyone else: it's like in the movies! Unbelievable

The phone company
My place has thick brick walls, therefore there's no way to have the internet connect card working here, and also the good old BB kind of suffers. So I had to surrender and, advised my the real estate agent, I booked an appointment for the internet installation
Here in NYC, but probably allover the US, internet phone and cable tv go through the equivalent of our tv antenna cable, therefore phone companies offer multiple packs
I tried to explain to the real estate agent that I don't really care about cable tv, but she insisted: it is always worth it to ask for a multipack, and in case cancel the tv - whatever

I spent 2h30 waiting for the technician, 30 minutes looking at him vainly trying to make my wireless modem work, 1h talking over the phone with the technical service; in the end, I asked the tech service to redirect me to the account service
The account guy was speaking so fast that the conversation was more painful to me than the famous "3 indian guys together in the office on the other end of the line" time, but in the end I managed to understand that, cancelling the tv, I could save 20$ per month
The guy was puzzled: just 20$ more!
But I don't really need cable tv: only a few interesting channels, and there's the internet anyway
But it's just 20$
Ok, but I don't want it!
But you are a key rewarded customer, you just subscribed!
Ok but I don't care!
I can make you a 10$/month discount, so it will cost you only 10$/month more, what's 10$ today?
I DON'T WANT YOUR DAMNED CABLE TV!!!
Look, you can have a 20$/month discount, for 24 months, so you pay the same amount and you keep the cable tv
Whatever, if it's the same price...

What can I say, America is a big Country baby ;)

Surviving the heat - Sopravvivere in forno

Yesterday New York City was a oven: 115 F at 1pm, which means 46°C

I don't know how, but I made it and I survived - good job
I have to admit that I spent the morning in the Guggenheim Museum (as usual, I temporarily forgot I don't like contemporary art) and the afternoon at my real estate agent office, to sign the contract, but in the whole day I anyway walked for about 10 miles (according to Google Maps) which are 16 km

Ok, I'll stop here with complaining, and I'll add some pictures

PS: Since it's Saturday AND I'm leaving tonight to come back to Rome, I think I can allow myself a muffin - Alice, I followed what we said: super healthy food during the week, and maybe breakfast at Starbucks if there's a good reason or a friend/family visiting ;)

Ieri New York City era un forno: 115 F all'1pm, che sarebbero 46°C

... and we're back

USA again!
This time East Coast, and for longer (about 1.5 years), since glorious ZS Associates transferred me to the New York City office

I'm in the US now for a few days, basically to look for an apartment - which I just found ;)
The location is perfect: Upper West Side

And the flat is really very nice

E l'appartamento è davvero molto carino

I'll come back to Rome on Sunday, and I'll finally officially transfer in mid Sep - wait for my late Summer updates then ;)

Tornerò a Roma domenica, per poi trasferirmi ufficialmente a metà settembre - aspettatevi altri aggiornamenti alla fine dell'estate ;)
